Please mark your calendars for an all-virtual professional development event, “Transforming Institutional Culture through Effective Anti-Racist Practices,” sponsored by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.

We invite you to join fellow community college leaders to learn about how to incorporate actionable Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) strategies into faculty, staff, and administrator professional development opportunities, culturally responsive teaching and learning practices, and student support services, all with an eye toward dismantling structural racism, establishing and sustaining anti-racist institutions, and promoting the success of a diverse student population systemwide.

Topics include:

  • Establishing DEI as a core professional competency for all community college employees
  • Highlighting equity-minded teaching and learning frameworks
  • Leveraging DEI as a lens and practice in the recruitment, hiring and retention processes
  • Incorporating DEI into performance review processes
  • Fostering the use of data and evidence as tools of empowerment

Suggested Audience: The event is open to everyone, including students. Primarily, however, the event is geared toward college employees and/or their elected representatives with designated duties and responsibilities related to: recruitment, hiring and/or retention, performance reviews, employee hiring manuals, and collective bargaining agreements. Such employees and/or representatives may include Senate Presidents, CEOs, CIOs, CSSOs, ACHRO, Middle Leaders and Trustees.

The event will be February 1 and 2. Registration information is to come.

GOVERNOR EXTENDS FLEXIBILITY FOR PUBLIC MEETINGS; CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE STAFF TRAVEL RESTRICTED AS OMICRON SURGES

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Wednesday to protect Californians amid increasing COVID-19 case rates and hospitalizations driven by the fast-spreading Omicron variant. The order extends the sunset of AB 361, which the governor signed in September to extend the flexibilities provided in a prior executive order enabling public agencies to meet remotely during the COVID-19 emergency. Under the order, state bodies are permitted to continue holding public meetings via teleconference through March 31, 2022.

In a related development, the state Chancellor's Office this week strongly discouraged its staff from traveling on non-essential business. "Recently the Chancellor's Office delayed commencement of our repopulation plan until April 1, 2022, due to the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 which is currently driving community spread to all-time highs.  Between now and April 1, to protect your personal safety, we strongly advise all staff to attend remotely any events or meetings conducted by community college stakeholders," the communication to staff read.
