RISING SCHOLARS NETWORK TO HIGHLIGHT VOICES OF STUDENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED INCARCERATION

Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley will officially launch Rising Scholars Network, an equity-driven initiative of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to prioritize and serve incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students, during the Voices of Freedom Webinar on February 5, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

Please register and join us on this date as we hear stories of hope and celebrate our Rising Scholars students.

  • Hear directly from students, including a student who will join the webinar from prison;
  • Learn how the student experience is impacted by the deep inequities of the criminal justice system, and how higher education can bring us closer to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice;
  • Preview The Possibility Report, the Campaign for College Opportunity’s forthcoming report on systematic barriers formerly incarcerated individuals face in accessing and completing a college education.

The webinar will also feature Reginald Dwayne Betts, the director of the Million Book Project, an initiative out of the Yale Law School’s Justice Collaboratory to radically transform the access to literature in prisons. For more than 20 years, he has used his poetry and essays to explore the world of prison and the effects of violence and incarceration on American society. The author of a memoir and three collections of poetry, his latest collection of poetry, Felon, explores the post incarceration experience and lingering consequences of a criminal record. In 2019, Betts won the National Magazine Award in the Essays and Criticism category for his New York Times Magazine essay that chronicles his journey from prison to becoming a licensed attorney. He is a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow and a 2018 Emerson Fellow at New America and holds a J.D. from Yale Law School.

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, in partnership with Cerritos College, Chaffey College, Foothill College, Compton College and Lake Tahoe Community College, is launching the Courageous Leadership Webinar Series, an opportunity to support each other as we choose courage over comfort in leading Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and anti-racism efforts on our campuses.

We invite college leaders to join the conversation to not only lift up what is working in championing DEI and anti-racism on campuses, but also share how we are navigating challenges and supporting each other in our struggles.

The next webinar is Thursday, February 18 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.; all webinars are held on the third Thursday of each month through Thursday, May 20. Please register for the Courageous Leadership Webinar Series to advance DEI and anti-racism and be fearless in our commitment to make the California Community Colleges truly student-ready.

The Chancellor’s Office is committed to keeping everyone informed during this uncertain time. We encourage administrators, faculty, staff and students to regularly check the Chancellor’s Office COVID-19 resource page and the Chancellor’s Office Communications to Colleges section for ongoing executive orders, guidance memos and announcements. Current and prospective students can also get connected with their local college to find out specific resources and support services available as well as enroll in their local community college.
