COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP WEBINAR SERIES LEARNING MODULES SHOWCASE EXEMPLARY EQUITY WORK AT FIVE COLLEGES

In early 2021, the Courageous Leadership webinar series was launched to highlight the accomplishments and exemplary work of California community Colleges striving to advance equity across their campuses and to share how they are navigating challenges.

Under the direction of the California Community College Chancellor’s Office, the Vision Resource Center team developed learning modules based on each of the five webinars featuring Cerritos College, Compton College, Foothill College, Lake Tahoe Community College and Santa Ana College. These video-based learning modules conveniently segment the webinar recordings by speaker and include additional information and resources. These learning modules extend the reach and life of these valuable conversations, particularly for new employees, and the additional resources encourage professionals to explore these topics in depth.

To access the Courageous Leadership learning modules, please FIRST log in to the Vision Resource Center and then click the following links:

The Cerritos College learning module highlights diversity, equity and inclusion from both a historical and a student perspective. Speakers also discuss creating a courageous campus culture and measuring successes in achieving equity-centered student success.

The Compton College learning module highlights the experiences of both students and faculty. Speakers discuss the importance of data, research and planning for institutional effectiveness and professional development for equity work.

The Foothill College learning module discusses the scope of equity work and the importance of developing a campus vision as well as centering race in student support services.

The Lake Tahoe Community College learning module shares student voices in equity work and emphasizes the efforts made by key staff, including the college’s Director of Equity.

The Santa Ana College learning module addresses both student services and academic affairs from personal, professional and systemic perspectives and discusses the transformative power of integrating student equity into the Guided Pathways Framework.

As you produce webinars that offer valuable content for California Community Colleges professionals, consider emailing the Vision Resource Center to discuss creating a learning module.

PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE OF CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL EVENT: Community College Math in California’s New Era of Student Access

Over the past few years, a landmark law (AB 705) has required California’s community colleges to move away from remedial courses, dramatically expanding student access to the math and English courses needed to transfer to a four-year college. How has the pandemic affected these reforms? Is AB 705 leading to better—and more equitable—student outcomes? Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) researcher Cesar Alesi Perez will outline new findings, and a panel of experts will talk about promoting equity and student success in the AB 705 era. The virtual event will be moderated by PPIC Center Director and Senior Fellow Hans Johnson and panelists include Vice Chancellor for Educational Services and Support Aisha Lowe, Sacramento City College Professor Virginia May and Los Medanos College Professor Myra Snell. The event is Thursday, Dec. 9 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Find more information and register at this link.
