NEW CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES SURVEY SHOWS KEY REASONS FOR STUDENT ENROLLMENT DECISIONS, HOW TO IMPROVE ENROLLMENT STRATEGIES
This fall, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office commissioned a successful statewide survey of current and prospective students. The final survey results were just released this week in an insightful report titled California Community Colleges (CCC) Attendance Decisions Survey.
The survey included responses from all 116 community colleges and more than 75,000 previously enrolled and prospective students. A key objective of the survey was to understand what influenced students’ decisions to enroll or re-enroll (for previously enrolled students) and what they needed to attend college during this time.
Student responses were clear on their increasing need to navigate complex lives and emphasized needing more flexible options, and financial and non-financial assistance to help balance these competing priorities. Moreover, these findings reinforce that the cost of attendance is more than money but also time for many students. These findings present three potential areas of opportunities at the state and local levels:
- Re-emphasize the value proposition for college to make workforce connections more explicit to help current and prospective students make informed decisions about the potential return on investment regarding their education.
- Increase student-centered course scheduling options and resources to better support students’ needs to balance school and personal/work responsibilities.
- Leverage state investments such as the California Virtual Campus to meet students’ growing demand for and interest in online offerings and state appropriations for mental health and basic needs monies; connect students with these services to support their educational pursuits.
As noted in the report, “by better understanding the factors influencing students’ decisions to attend college, community colleges and the state can better support students’ pursuit of an education at a community college and improve local and statewide enrollment management and retention strategies.”

Registration is Open for the 2023 EOPS/NextUp Spring Training
Register now for the 2023 EOPS/NextUp Spring Training, scheduled for April 18 and 19 at Hilton Sacramento Arden West. This two-day event will focus on training and technical assistance for EOPS/CARE and NextUp programs staff. Registration for this event will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note: no more than two to three attendees per college can register to attend this event.

The 5th Annual CCC LGBTQ+ Summit will be held virtually April 19-20, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Join and collaborate with members of the California Community Colleges at all levels. The summit is a space for students, faculty, classified professionals and administrators where we will focus on this year’s theme: “Fiercer Together - Uplifting Queer & Trans Students on Our Campuses” and on improving not only individual community college campuses but encouraging changes at the structural level as well. We will learn from each other’s innovative and successful ideas that will transform campuses so that we better serve and affirm LGBTQ+ students.

2023 Black Student Success Week
The 2023 Black Student Success Week is scheduled for April 24 through April 28. This year's theme is "Vision to Action: Building Systems and Structures for Black Student Success."
The focus of the week-long event will be on successful approaches to ensuring Black and African American students succeed at California community colleges.
The schedule of virtual activities for the week include:
- The Black Hour: A series of daily webinars hosted from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
- The After Party: A series of daily small group discussion forums held from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.
- The BlackOut: A virtual advocacy day event held on April 27, 2023

Creating Advance Parole Programs on Your Campus
Since 2013, CARECEN has organized 7 advance parole trips to Central America. In 2022, CARECEN led a delegation of staff from California Community Colleges, CSUs, and UCs to Guatemala. The goal of this trip was to collectively develop promising practices in advance parole programming and foster partnerships between higher education institutions and legal service providers. In recognition of the important role that international travel plays in higher education, please plan to attend a webinar on Thursday, February 23 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. that will help offer colleges the tools they need to plan trips that intentionally cater to the unique needs of students who need advance parole to travel abroad. This webinar will cover:
- Planning group travel in the advance parole context;
- Navigating campus policies to create your trip;
- Determining program participants and expected trip outcomes;
- Planning itineraries, budgets, and other logistical requirements; and
- Working with legal service providers to ensure attendees are represented by legal counsel.

Immigration Legal Services Regional Meetings
During the early days of launching legal services, the Foundation for California Community Colleges (FCCC) held a number of regional convenings. These regional convenings brought together the FCCC, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, college administrators, California Department of Social Services and our dedicated team of legal service providers.
The FCCC is bringing back in-person meetings beginning in March. Since the launch, we have expanded our services to include all 115 physical colleges, and hope these meetings offer an opportunity to collaborate and share.
Times and locations:
All meetings are from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. with optional lunch and networking after until 1:30. All locations will vary based on your designated legal service provider.
Who should attend:
We request that at least one representative (no students) from each college should attend (more are welcome). We would like to have a robust discussion about how services are going, what can be done to improve, and any other undocumented student support issues your colleges have faced.
