CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE RELEASES 2021 STATE OF THE SYSTEM REPORT AND UPDATE TO THE VISION FOR SUCCESS

The past year has been a test like no other for our students, faculty and staff, serving up pain and loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic and racial injustice. Yet despite these challenges we continue to show progress toward meeting goals of the system’s Vision for Success, which sets a path to increase certificate and degree attainment, to improve transfer and to close equity gaps.

This week, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office released its annual State of the System report, detailing the increase in transfers to both the University of California and California State University systems; the increase in the number of students earning Associate Degrees for Transfer; the steadfast work to close equity and achievement gaps across the state and all of the work being done to achieve the Vision for Success goals.

Adopted in 2017, the Vision for Success, has served as our system’s North Star by making clear our goals for improvement and our commitment to do better for both our students and for
our state. As we emerge from this trying year as a higher education system that is stronger and more resilient than ever, and our “new normal” is one defined by empathy and innovation, we are pleased to introduce the Update to the Vision for Success: Reaffirming Equity in a Time of Recovery

The purpose of this document is to reaffirm our goals and commitments in light of today’s challenges. We know our students are hurting: facing severe financial strain, mental health challenges and struggling with basic needs insecurity. We are resolving to meet our students where they’re at and make real, sustained progress in serving them better and making California a national model for equitable recovery in higher education.

We’re also reiterating our resolve to achieve equity, and show how our system will play a central role in California’s economic and social recovery.

The work ahead will not be easy but this past year has shown the California Community Colleges can rise to any obstacle that may come our way. This is our moment.
