VISION FOR SUCCESS CORE COMMITMENT 3: PAIR HIGH EXPECTATIONS WITH HIGH SUPPORT

This is part of a series highlighting colleges activating the core commitments.
Reaffirming that all students are capable of achieving their end goals, the Vision for Success encourages us to provide robust and wide-ranging supports to meet students where they are and help them achieve those goals. Colleges are becoming more intentional about how to encourage and support students, including by building expectations into core polices and practices. In addition to high academic expectations and academic supports, colleges have dramatically stepped up to support students with basic needs that are accessible, inclusive, and dignified. 

This month, we feature colleges activating core commitment 3 through the implementation of Equitable Placement and Support (AB 705). While equity gaps still exist, all student groups have increased completion of transfer-level English and math after the implementation of AB 705. Looking ahead, implementing this reform with fidelity will continue to yield better results in course completion, college completion, transfer, and equity for our students – and authentic student engagement and input can help colleges refine academic services and supports for maximum effectiveness.

GUIDED PATHWAYS 2.0 PROJECT INSIGHTS 

New resources to support Guided Pathways implementation are available in the Vision Resource Center! The first brief in a new series, “Creating Guided Pathways to Prosperity and Equity,” outlines equity-focused practices that help students explore, choose, plan, and complete high-opportunity programs of study–those that enable students to secure a family-supporting career directly after completion or transfer with junior standing in a major field of interest. The brief amplifies strategies and resources shared by national student success experts and leaders in California community colleges at the November 2021 institute of the Guided Pathways 2.0 project, including examining enrollment and completion patterns in high-opportunity programs, incorporating career information in program maps, onboarding and supporting students to succeed, and fostering partnership with industry. A second brief, based on a March 2021 webinar, “Build a Sense of Belonging and Connection at Community College: Strategies for Designing Experiences that Enhance Student Engagement and Learning,” suggests that a students’ sense of belonging on-campus is core to students’ success and impacts retention. The brief provides colleges with strategies to design experiences that increase student engagement within metamajors. 

These briefs are being curated as a collection titled “Guided Pathways Playbook,” which will continue to develop along with the institutes and webinars through 2023. The briefs and recordings and resources from most presentations at Guided Pathways 2.0 institutes and webinars are available in the Vision Resource Center Guided Pathways community in the Guided Pathways 2.0 folder (found under “Topics” in the main Guided Pathways community). The Hayward Award for Excellence in Education 2021-22 Winners
The Hayward Award for Excellence in Education awards have been presented annually since 1989 to honor community college faculty members who are selected by their peers for demonstrating the highest level of commitment to their students, college, and profession. Award recipients, nominated by their college academic senate and selected by representatives of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, must have a record of outstanding performance of professional activities, as well as active participation on campus. Up to two full-time and two part-time faculty members may be selected each year to win the award. The Hayward Awards are supported through a grant from the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Each recipient will receive a $1,250 cash award and a commemorative plaque. The award is named in honor of Gerald C. Hayward, who served as chancellor of the California Community Colleges from 1980 to 1985.
 
This year, the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges selected three winners for the Hayward Award for Excellence in Education:

  • Anne Kingsley, a full-time English and Distance Education faculty member at Diablo Valley College
  • Winsome Jackson, a full-time Political Science faculty member at Sierra College
  • Marilyn Brock, a part-time English and Humanities faculty member at Coastline College

Black Student Success Week is returning April 25-29, 2022. This year’s theme is: A Vision for Black Student Success: Creating a New Landscape to Succeed. The 2022 Black Student Success Week will focus on new approaches to ensure Black and African American students succeed at California Community Colleges as we recover from the pandemic.

The week’s activities will be held virtually and include: 

  • Daily webinars hosted from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., called The Black Hour
  • Daily small group discussion forums from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., called The After Party
  • A virtual advocacy day on Thursday, April 28th, called The BlackOut

Early registration is now open for this year’s LGBTQ+ Summit on Wednesday and Thursday, May 4 and 5. This conference is a space for students, faculty, classified professionals and administrators. 

The CCC LGBTQ+ Summit 2022 is an opportunity to collaborate with members of the California Community Colleges at all levels. We will learn from each other’s innovative and successful ideas that will transform campuses so that we better serve and affirm LGBTQ+ students.

Last month, the Network of California Community Colleges honored the Jay Pritzker Foundation as the 2021 Bernard Osher Philanthropist of the Year. The virtual award ceremony was an inspiring and uplifting celebration of the Pritzker’s historic $100 million commitment to the Foundation for California Community Colleges to support the California Community Colleges and the students they serve. The Pritzker’s generous gift has enabled the creation of the Finish Line Scholars program at 34 colleges across the state. Programs like this are just one of the many ways philanthropic gifts to the California Community Colleges can change the lives of students. As the Pritzkers have often said, their goal is to support those “the most in need with the drive to succeed,” and California’s 116 community colleges enroll some of the most committed students in the nation facing some of the toughest challenges.
