VISION FOR SUCCESS CORE COMMITMENT 4: FOSTER THE USE OF DATA, INQUIRY AND EVIDENCE

This is part of a series highlighting colleges activating the core commitments.

From systemwide decisions to individual interactions with students, the Vision for Success encourages us to establish a culture that examines student data on a regular basis and uses it to improve instruction and services. This is especially true for data related to students who have been historically underserved and marginalized.

Colleges have been investing in data systems and practices that help individual students stay on track and provide tools for staff and faculty to assist them. In the midst of COVID-19 and the resulting enrollment loss at many colleges, a pressing use for data right now is determining which students have left the college and using the information to get them back. A closely related priority is identifying and deploying additional resources to students who are at risk of dropping out. Colleges are becoming more and more sophisticated in how they do this.

This month, we feature two colleges that are activating core commitment 4. Compton College is using data to serve students better and Golden West College is boosting completion through better data use.

Read more about how Compton College and Golden West College are using data for institutional improvement.

With the recognition that student mental health and wellness are critical to student success, the Board of Governor’s recently approved a resolution establishing Mental Health Action Week to strengthen trauma-informed care expertise across the system, improve our classroom climates and campus culture, remove structural barriers, and advocate for additional resources to meet the diverse mental health service needs of California community college students and employees. Multiple webinars were held this week to support these efforts. Recordings and information for all the webinars can be found on the Vision Resource Center.

Additionally, mental health resources, including how to support students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds; suicide prevention; and how to build mental health support on your campus are available on the Mental Health Program Resources page.
