Chancellor’s Office Realignment Aimed at Improving Student Outcomes

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office is embarking on a realignment seen as critical to advancing Guided Pathways and the Vision for Success. The move is aimed at better aligning its organizational structure with desired outcomes, improving resiliency and better preparing for succession, and strengthening communication and cross collaboration.

The realignment will result in three major offices, each led by an executive vice chancellor. Divisions under each new office will retain their previous names and will be led by a vice chancellor.

Highlights include:

  • College Finance and Facilities Planning, the Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative (IEPI) and Government Relations will align under the new Institutional Supports and Success Office, which will be led by Executive Vice Chancellor Lizette Navarette. This new office – through advocacy, professional development, external engagement, and resource allocation – will lead the charge in ensuring colleges and college districts eliminate achievement gaps and enable students from all backgrounds to reach their goals. Changes are expected to be complete in November.
  • Educational Services and Supports will align with Workforce and Economic Development under the new Equitable Student Learning, Experience, and Impact Office, which will be led by Executive Vice Chancellor Marty Alvarado. Leveraging guided pathways, common course numbering and other reform strategies, this new office will evaluate and adapt strategies supporting seamless educational experiences. Changes are expected to be complete by December.
  • Digital Innovation and Infrastructure will align with Research and Data Division to form the new Innovation, Data, Evidence and Analytics Office. The office will develop and deliver information technology and security services, student-centered technology-focused initiatives, evidence-based reporting and evaluation. A search is under way to find an executive vice chancellor to lead this division. Changes are expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2022.

“I am confident these changes will help break down silos within our organization, integrate key aspects of our work and improve how we communicate and collaborate as a team,” said Acting Chancellor Daisy Gonzales. “In doing so, I hope they will also boost morale and performance and aid in our ongoing shift from a compliance-driven organization to one that is a true catalyst for systemwide transformation.”

ASPIRING RADICAL LEADERS INSTITUTE: NOMINATION APPLICATION OPEN UNTIL NOVEMBER 20

The Coalition is a group of three higher educational organizations standing in solidarity in addressing conditions of inequity within the California Community Colleges. These organizations include the African American Male Education Network and Development (A2MEND), Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and California Community College Organizacion de Latinx Empowerment Guidance & Advocacy for Success (COLEGAS).

The Coalition has created the Aspiring Radical Leaders Institute (ARLI) to develop a cohort of radical educators who promote issues of equity and race and to deconstruct and dismantle structural racism. ARLI will take place from 2022-2024 and will have a cohort model for the leaders selected. The leadership program will create an alternative space where leaders are loved, supported, affirmed, and rewarded for leading with authenticity.

The Aspiring Radical Leaders Institute (ARLI) contributes to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Vision for Success Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) goal to increase faculty and staff diversity in our system. In addition to working with the Chancellor’s Office, we will partner with the DEI Implementation Workgroup statewide leaders and associations, specifically in the areas of coaching/mentorship and employment recruitment.

Please nominate a professional that could benefit from the institute. The Cohort 1 nomination application deadline is open until November 20, 2021. All applicants will be notified of their admissions status no later than the end of November 2021 via email after a thorough review of their application materials.
