JOIN THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN RECOGNIZING MENTAL HEALTH ACTION WEEK MAY 1 - 5

The California Community Colleges Board of Governors established Mental Health Action Week, May 1 - 5.

Many of us who work with students don’t need statistics to know that mental health struggles are rising. College students are experiencing all-time high rates of depression, anxiety and suicidality, according to a new Healthy Minds survey. But the survey also shows promising news: more students are asking for, and getting, the help they need.

To help continue this trend, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors established Mental Health Action Week to strengthen trauma-informed care expertise across the system, improve our classroom climates and campus culture, remove structural barriers, and advocate for additional resources to meet the diverse mental health service needs of California community college students and employees.

Please join us for the California Community Colleges’ upcoming Mental Health Action Week webinar series:

Monday, May 1, 2023 | Using Data and Evidence to Promote Mental Health in California Community Colleges - 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Join us to hear about new survey data on mental health and related factors such as basic needs among California community college students. The data is from the Healthy Minds Study, a national study of student mental health that included 14 California community colleges in Winter/Spring 2022. The data elevates the need for additional mental health services and support among California community college students. Hear how these findings can be translated into an economic case for greater investment in student mental health. You can also learn about an innovative system of mental health support that is being piloted at East Los Angeles College, and we will discuss more broadly what is known about effective and equitable strategies to support student mental health at a population level.

System Guidance/News

The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office is pleased to share a valuable publication developed by the Chancellor’s Student Engagement, Enrollment and Success CEO Roundtable, which has been working over the past several months to identify enrollment trends, opportunities and promising best practices.

The report, Top 10 Strategies to Better Serve Californians: High-impact Practices to Bring Back Underrepresented Students to California’s Community Colleges summarizes 10 approaches to engaging and re-engaging with students to improve outcomes and enrollment as we continue to innovate in the post pandemic era. The CEO roundtable worked to understand how local models to re-engage and support the success of our students are being integrated into the fabric of institutions.

Such strategies have allowed our system to turn the tide on enrollment with an intentional focus on persistence and equitable success. As the important work to reengage Californians and connect them to the life-changing opportunities that exist at our communities’ colleges continues, we hope this compilation of strategies will support your local efforts.
