THE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February is Black History Month, and the California Community Colleges proudly honors this annual observance that celebrates and honors the achievements of African Americans throughout history and pays tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled to achieve full U.S. citizenship.

Our community colleges across the state are honoring Black History Month with campus events, including art exhibits, HBCU caravans, speaking events and student forums. Just some of the celebrations include a number of events throughout the San Diego Community College District; a month-long celebration of events at Fresno City College; an array of discussions and meet-ups at Mira Costa College; a variety of Black History Month events at Diablo Valley College; and numerous campus and community events at Bakersfield College. We also encourage you to watch a film by Moorpark College, A Tribute to Black History, a film featuring students, faculty and staff honoring Black and African American success. Please reach out to your local college to learn more about how the campus community is observing this month.

The California Community Colleges also recognizes that honoring Black and African American achievements goes beyond one month of the year. The Chancellor’s Office and our system remain steadfast in our commitment to support our Black and African American students, break down barriers that may stand in their way of a higher education and to close equity gaps and achievement gaps once and for all.

Online Instruction/Webinars

The Chancellor’s Office is hosting an upcoming webinar on Equitable Placement, Support and Completion: Implementation and Implications of AB 1705.
Our system has made substantial improvements in creating access for students to progress in their academic achievements through equitable placement practices and completion in transfer-level math and English courses. AB 705 shifted district and college assessment and completion efforts and implemented systemwide remedial education reform.

The purpose of this webinar is to provide participants (colleges/districts) with guidance to support the successful implementation of AB 1705, with fidelity, including opportunities to ask clarifying questions and identify areas in need of additional resources and investments. As California community colleges continue to implement Equitable Placement and Completion, colleges must do so with a continued focus on maximizing student access, support, and success, guided by local research and annual cycles of continuous improvement.

Register for Equitable Placement, Support and Completion webinar on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. as we discuss key provisions of AB 1705, clarify guidance, and share research, implementation, and evaluation resources for Equitable Placement and Completion.
