SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley issued the following statement on Ted Mitchell being named president of the American Council on Education.

“Ted Mitchell is an inspired choice to lead the American Council on Education. During his tenure with the Department of Education under the Obama administration, Mitchell was an unwavering supporter of community colleges and the role they play in getting more Americans connected to the new economy in a meaningful way. He will serve the council well in advocating for policies that improve access and quality in higher education.”

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation composed of 72 districts and 114 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year. Community colleges supply workforce training, basic skills education and prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions. The Chancellor’s Office provides leadership, advocacy and support under the direction of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges.
