SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley issued the following statement about the sudden passing early today of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Mayor Lee. On behalf of the entire California Community Colleges system, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Mayor Lee was a devoted public servant who served the city of San Francisco with honor and respect. A true advocate for education, Mayor Lee was a champion for City College of San Francisco and helped bring free tuition to thousands of San Francisco students. Mayor Lee will be deeply missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and daughters during this difficult time.”

The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation composed of 72 districts and 114 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year. Community colleges supply workforce training, basic skills education and prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions.
