SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Community Colleges Chancellor Sonya Christian today issued the following statement on the budget agreement reached by legislative leaders and Gov. Gavin Newsom:.
"The final budget plan reflects the administration’s and Legislature’s unwavering commitment to the mission of the California Community Colleges as forward-thinking workforce engines that will power the state’s future economic innovation. While revenue forecasts remain uncertain, the budget agreement advances our Vision 2030 priorities and further positions California’s community colleges as trailblazers in economic and social mobility by providing increased stability for essential funding. It prioritizes investments in enrollment increases, empowering colleges to keep their doors open for all students who are seeking the path to family-sustaining wages.
“With credit for prior learning, community colleges will also be in the business of recognizing skills and making those available to our veterans, apprentices, and workers, bridging the divide between industry skills and college credit. The additional investments in technology infrastructure will be leveraged to combat suspected fraud and cybersecurity attacks, examine student outcomes at scale and with equity, and implement timely policy solutions based on real-time information.
“We are grateful to Governor Newsom and the Legislature for maintaining and strengthening our core funding during a difficult budget and for supporting the priorities of the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. We look forward to shaping a stronger, more resilient California.”
