Regional Professional Development Strategy

Systemwide Learning, Disciplinary Innovation, Regional ResponsivenessThe California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office is committed to empowering faculty in an AI-driven era. As artificial intelligence reshapes the ways we teach, learn, and work, faculty professional development must evolve to meet this moment. This requires professional development that supports faculty as they build the knowledge, skills, and ethical frameworks needed to integrate AI into instruction and student support—ensuring that all students, particularly those historically underserved, can thrive in an increasingly digital and data-informed world. By investing in faculty as leaders of innovation and equity, this strategy also strengthens California’s broader goals: advancing inclusive student success and preparing a skilled workforce for the state’s evolving economy.

This statewide strategy is grounded in a shared belief: that every faculty member—regardless of discipline, location, or role—deserves access to relevant, high-quality learning opportunities that build both technological fluency and human-centered leadership. The plan is structured around three integrated approaches: systemwide learning, regional responsiveness, and disciplinary innovation. Together, these create a professional development ecosystem that is coherent, flexible, and deeply aligned with the realities of California’s colleges. At the center of this approach is a commitment to collaboration across institutions and partners to ensure faculty are not navigating these changes alone.

    Statewide Collaborations

    2025-2026

The Regional Professional Development Networks (RDPNs) will be led by PD Leads from each college that will convene in a community of practice throughout the 2025-2026 academic year. Each regional CoP will convene with their college and district constituents, Strong Workforce Regional Consortia, and other system partners to identify regional faculty PD needs in support of AI literacy and AI readiness. Through collaboration and sharing of resources and practices, each region will host a regional untethered professional development event in Spring 2026 and develop a 2026-2027 Regional PD Plan.

In partnership with their local Academic Senates, Vice Presidents of Instruction identified 1-3 PD Leads in Fall 2025 who are serving in nine regional Communities of Practice across the state. The Lead PD CoPs meet monthly between fall and spring with facilitation provided by the Chancellor’s Office, to envision, design, and implement regional professional development in support of faculty AI literacy. Spring 2026 regional events will be shared on the Vision Resource Center’s systemwide calendar.

Making Professional Development More Equitable

Regional Professional Development Networks are coordinating broad-access professional development events and programs that provide flexible attendance options. Untethered professional development is an example of a design approach that minimizes the load of coordinating campus-specific events by bringing a regional online program to faculty regardless of where they are and making opportunities for college-specific discussions and workshops that wrap around the program.
