Nursing and Allied Health

The California colleges Nursing and Allied Health programs provide instruction leading to a certificate, associate degrees, and transfers to four-year institutions. Our goals are to:

Improve the employability of newly graduated nurses and allied health professionals to function as safe and effective patient care practitioners
Promote and support statewide efforts to increase the pipeline of baccalaureate-prepared nursing and allied health professionals
Support colleges to deliver health care workforce training programs to meet the future demands of a growing, aging, and diverse population.

California Nursing Shortage, 2006 (PDF)

The Nurse Assistant Training and Assessment Program Model Curriculum has been developed to prepare the Nurse Assistant for certification by the State of California as an entry-level worker on a health care team in a long-term care facility. The curriculum is structured to provide theory and practical application on skills needed to function as a Certified Nurse Assistant.

The Health Workforce Initiative (HWI) was a program of the Workforce and Economic Development division of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. HWI fostered communication and collaboration between the health care industry and education systems. By identifying and highlighting health care workforce needs, HWI helped California Community Colleges to respond effectively to changing workforce needs. With the sunset of the HWI program and website, resources that continue to hold relevancy today can be found below.

Nursing Assistant Curriculum

The Certified Nursing Assistant model curriculum was last updated by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office in 2018. The curriculum meets federal and state requirements, in addition to the requirements for 60 hours of theory and 100 hours of clinical stated in the California Health and Safety Code.

Home Health Aid Curriculum

The California Community College Health Care Initiative and the Regional Health Occupations Resource Centers developed the following curriculum in compliance with federal and state requirements for the training of nursing assistants to become home health aides.

Hi-Touch Health Care: The Critical Six Soft Skills

The six critical soft skills are:

communication competency
workplace ethics and professionalism
team building and collaboration
effective problem solving
Embracing diversity, and
Demonstrating compassion
