Dear California Community College Colleagues:
As Veterans Day approaches, the California Community Colleges say thank you to our active-duty military, military veterans, military reservists and dependents – thank you for your service and for protecting the freedoms we hold dear.
California community colleges are proud to support veterans and active-duty service members as they pursue education and new career paths. California is home to approximately 1.8 million veterans, and many turn to our community colleges for debt-free education and career training. Each year, over 30,000 veterans, active-duty members, and their families enroll in our colleges, gaining access to critical resources like Veterans Resource Centers, credit for prior learning, priority registration and mental health services.
Our Vision 2030 initiative emphasizes meeting students where they are—whether on military bases, on campus or in the community—to ensure a welcoming environment and a strong support system as they transition to civilian life or continue their service. California community colleges are committed to empowering those who have served by providing the education and resources they need to succeed.
Additionally, the state Chancellor’s Office is advancing two Vision 2030 Demonstration Projects that focus on our student veterans – Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) that offers college credits for experiences in the military and Mental Health and Wellness services for our student veterans.
Check out this 2:27-minute video that Board of Governors Member Dr. Blas Villalobos recorded for the CPL summit.
The California Community Colleges and its campuses will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. On Monday, and every day, I urge us all to take a moment to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of veterans and consider how we can each support those who serve our country.
Sincerely,
sonya
