EQUITABLE PLACEMENT, SUPPORT AND COMPLETION COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE NOW OPEN

Please join the 2022-2023 “Equitable Placement, Support and Completion” Community of Practice (ComP), a joint effort between the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and The Puente Project. This ComP approaches equitable placement and completion as a justice imperative through a racial equity lens. Participants will be guided through an inquiry process of finding, analyzing, and reflecting upon their own individual and institutional data for the purpose of equity-conscious decision- making regarding classroom policies and practices. Participants will engage with critical frameworks and examples of how they can be applied at the classroom, division, and institutional levels. 

The four thematic Community of Practice Cohorts include:

This Community of Practice is open to all faculty. We especially encourage the participation of part-time faculty, counseling faculty, and faculty teaching transfer-level Math and English. Participating faculty will receive transcript notation through the Vision Resource Center as well as an optional extension credit pathway through UC Merced. Through the “Equitable Placement, Support and Completion” Community of Practice, faculty will have the opportunity to build local coalitions, foster a sense of community through networking, and opportunities for peer-to-peer learning or institutional capacity building to advance change at their campuses. SAVE THE DATE: ACUE’S CREATING AN INCLUSIVE AND SUPPORTING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS

In partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), California Community College Chancellor’s Office is excited to offer faculty an opportunity to participate in one of ACUE’s programs in effective teaching practices. 

Starting in January 2023, faculty will be able to join one of ACUE’s microcredential cohorts: 

Inspiring Inquiry and Preparing Lifelong Learners 

Addresses practices from motivating students to using visualization tools that deepen learning and help students take greater ownership for their own learning. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules:

  • Motivating Your Students 
  • Providing Clear Directions and Explanations  
  • Using Concept Maps and Other Visualization Tools  
  • Using Student Achievement and Feedback to Improve Your Teaching  
  • Using Advanced Questioning Techniques  
  • Developing Self-Directed Learners 

Designing Student-Centered Courses 

Addresses the pedagogical approaches, as well as some technical basics, to help you design a course and course materials that support student success. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules:

  • Establishing Powerful Learning Outcomes
  • Aligning Assessments with Course Outcomes
  • Aligning Activities and Assignments with Course Outcomes
  • Developing Fair, Consistent, and Transparent Grading Practices
  • Developing and Using Rubrics and Checklists
  • Preparing an Effective Syllabus

Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning 

Provides instructors with proven strategies to create a more equitable and just learning environment. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules: 

  • Managing the Impact of Bias
  • Reducing Microaggressions in Learning Environments
  • Addressing Imposter Phenomenon and Stereotype Threat
  • Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
  • Designing Equity-Centered Courses

Over the course of 6-8 weeks, you’ll learn about and implement a series of research-based teaching practices shown to improve student outcomes. Upon course completion, you will earn a nationally-recognized Microcredential, which are the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Join the upcoming webinar, Representation Matters: How Racial Equity in Recruitment, Hiring and Retention of Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators Advances Equitable Outcomes in Student Achievement, on Friday, Nov. 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m. 
 
The purpose of the event is to elevate the experiences of Black faculty, staff and administrators. This event will spotlight equity champions and the tools, resources, and guidance available that supports faculty, staff and administrator’s ability to lead change in equity-focused hiring and retention practices while also supporting the cultivation of anti-racist teaching and learning environments. Our intention is also to center the updated Equal Employment Opportunity Handbook that was recently revised and the urgency we need to move in to ensure hiring practices for African Americans are in line with the historic resources and advocacy.

Items of Interest

This year, the Chancellor’s Office released the inaugural edition of the Compendium of Allocations and Resources (the Compendium) to support district and college leaders in the implementation and effective use of 2022-23 fiscal resources. 

The Compendium provides fiscal and program guidance in one central location to facilitate access to information. 

Monthly updates to the Compendium will be released through the First Principal Apportionment in February. The second update for October 2022  is now available on the Budget News page. On page 9 of this release, we provide a bulleted list of new or updated content, which is summarized below.

Major updates from the September 2022 edition to the October 2022 edition:

  1. Perkins V: IC- Local Assistance guidance and allocations tables are updated to reflect augmentation of additional funding.
  2. Cybersecurity Strategy updates. Includes updates on eligibility for AB 178 (ongoing) funds in FY22-23, provides due dates for Bi-Annual Cybersecurity Remediation Reports and the
  3. Triennial Security Review and Penetration Testing, and provides fraud-related updates including the ID Proofing RFI and information about the Thursday, October 27, 2022 webinar on fraud mitigation.
