The California Community Colleges Board of Governors received the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Equity Award for the Pacific region at the ACCT National Leadership Congress Conference on Oct. 27, 2022.
The Equity Award recognizes a commitment to achieve equity in the college’s education programs and services, and in the administration and delivery of those programs and services. Nominees had to show leadership in setting policies that promote and enhance opportunities for institutional diversity, inclusion, and equity for women, persons of color, LGBTQ+ or members of any other underrepresented or underserved population. Another member of the California Community Colleges family was recognized by ACCT for excellence when Deborah Ikeda, vice president of the Board of Trustees for State Center Community College District, received the national M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership Award. The leadership award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution as a lay trustee toward promoting the community college concept.
SAVE THE DATE: ACUE’S CREATING AN INCLUSIVE AND SUPPORTING LEARNING ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS
In partnership with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), California Community College Chancellor’s Office is excited to offer faculty an opportunity to participate in one of ACUE’s programs in effective teaching practices.
Starting in January 2023, faculty will be able to join one of ACUE’s microcredential cohorts:
Inspiring Inquiry and Preparing Lifelong Learners
Addresses practices from motivating students to using visualization tools that deepen learning and help students take greater ownership for their own learning. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules:
- Motivating Your Students
- Providing Clear Directions and Explanations
- Using Concept Maps and Other Visualization Tools
- Using Student Achievement and Feedback to Improve Your Teaching
- Using Advanced Questioning Techniques
- Developing Self-Directed Learners
Designing Student-Centered Courses
Addresses the pedagogical approaches, as well as some technical basics, to help you design a course and course materials that support student success. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules:
- Establishing Powerful Learning Outcomes
- Aligning Assessments with Course Outcomes
- Aligning Activities and Assignments with Course Outcomes
- Developing Fair, Consistent, and Transparent Grading Practices
- Developing and Using Rubrics and Checklists
- Preparing an Effective Syllabus
Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning
Provides instructors with proven strategies to create a more equitable and just learning environment. Faculty will learn practices from the following modules:
- Managing the Impact of Bias
- Reducing Microaggressions in Learning Environments
- Addressing Imposter Phenomenon and Stereotype Threat
- Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
- Designing Equity-Centered Courses
Over the course of 6-8 weeks, you’ll learn about and implement a series of research-based teaching practices shown to improve student outcomes. Upon course completion, you will earn a nationally-recognized Microcredential, which are the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Executive Vice Chancellor Lizette Navarette, EdD, has been named interim deputy chancellor of California Community Colleges, becoming the second woman to hold the position following the promotion of Daisy Gonzales, PhD, to interim chancellor in August.
“California community colleges have a led heroic efforts throughout the pandemic and now have a tremendous opportunity to continue to close equity gaps and eliminate regional achievement gaps. Dr. Navarette brings the technical and leadership skills necessary to support our 116-college system through the next phase of implementation of our strategic plan, the Vision for Success,” said Gonzales. “Dr. Navarette’s personal background resembles that of many of the students that we serve, and I am proud to lead alongside her.”
Join the upcoming webinar, Representation Matters: How Racial Equity in Recruitment, Hiring and Retention of Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators Advances Equitable Outcomes in Student Achievement, on Friday, Nov. 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The purpose of the event is to elevate the experiences of Black faculty, staff and administrators. This event will spotlight equity champions and the tools, resources, and guidance available that supports faculty, staff and administrator’s ability to lead change in equity-focused hiring and retention practices while also supporting the cultivation of anti-racist teaching and learning environments. Our intention is also to center the updated Equal Employment Opportunity Handbook that was recently revised and the urgency we need to move in to ensure hiring practices for African Americans are in line with the historic resources and advocacy.

This year, the Chancellor’s Office released the inaugural edition of the Compendium of Allocations and Resources (the Compendium) to support district and college leaders in the implementation and effective use of 2022-23 fiscal resources.
The Compendium provides fiscal and program guidance in one central location to facilitate access to information.
Monthly updates to the Compendium will be released through the First Principal Apportionment in February. The second update for October 2022 is now available on the Budget News page. On page 9 of this release, we provide a bulleted list of new or updated content, which is summarized below.
Major updates from the September 2022 edition to the October 2022 edition:
- Perkins V: IC- Local Assistance guidance and allocations tables are updated to reflect augmentation of additional funding.
- Cybersecurity Strategy updates. Includes updates on eligibility for AB 178 (ongoing) funds in FY22-23, provides due dates for Bi-Annual Cybersecurity Remediation Reports and the
