VISION FOR SUCCESS CORE COMMITMENT 5: TAKE OWNERSHIP OF GOALS AND PERFORMANCE

This is part of a series highlighting colleges activating the core commitments.

Goals and performance can and should be part of a college’s institutional culture and identity. The Vision for Success established broad systemwide goals and colleges adopted aligned goals for their own contexts. As we continue to make progress, the Vision serves as a reminder that goal-setting is not a one-time event. Now is the time for districts and colleges to drill down into their goals and performance with a particular emphasis on diversity and equity—and to bring students authentically into the conversation.

Goal setting is the beginning of an investigation into how the college can do better, particularly in serving students who face barriers created by the structures of traditional higher education and society at large. Looking ahead, the next frontier is for colleges to realign resources—fiscal, personnel, facilities—in support of their goals.

This month, we feature San Diego Mesa College for activating core commitment 5. Faced with the pandemic and its impact on enrollment in 2020, the college’s leadership team swiftly began analyzing which students left and used the information to take action.
