Together in Advocacy: A Plan for an Equitable Recovery: The California Community Colleges 2021-22 Budget and Legislative Agenda

On Friday, October 30, please join the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office for a webinar on how together we can advocate for California’s 2.1 million community college students. Participants will review policy decisions affecting community colleges, including 2020-21 budget and legislative actions, how these actions have shaped our advocacy going into 2021 and how community colleges, students and higher education advocates can engage in advocacy partnerships. Also, learn about the recently approved 2021-22 System Budget and Legislative Request: A Plan for An Equitable Recovery.

System Guidance/News

Vice Chancellor for Educational Services and Support Rebecca Ruan-O’Shaughnessy this week released updated guidance on the Chancellor’s Office’s systemwide prioritization for real-time captioning and closed caption support. You can find this information on the Communications to Colleges section of the Chancellor’s Office COVID-19 resource page. We encourage administrators, faculty, staff and students to regularly check and ongoing executive orders, guidance memos and announcements.


Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley this month spoke with his alma mater, the University of California, Irvine, on ensuring college access for first-generation students. Chancellor Oakley discusses his own journey as a first-gen student, shares advise for students navigating their own college journeys and talks about how California community colleges are navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Online Instruction/Webinars

The California Virtual Campus – Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI) continues its series of webinars focused on the future of online Career Education in California. This webinar series highlights the work of grantee colleges and districts that received funds from the California Community Colleges, through CVC-OEI, to accelerate innovative online learning opportunities leading to increased employability and upward mobility for working Californians. Each webinar provides an opportunity for grantees from different sectors of Career Education to share the approaches and lessons learned that made their online programs successes. The Chancellor’s Office, in partnership with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), is pleased to present the third forum in the series related to police academy programs operated by California community colleges. The next webinar is Thursday, November 5 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. It will focus on evidence-based policing and explore how academy directors, instructors and training officers can effectively implement evidence-based programs.
