An exciting opportunity for five leaders to shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI) across California’s community colleges.

The California Community College Chancellor’s Office in collaboration with the Digital Center for Innovation, Transformation, and Equity (Digital Center) is seeking five exceptional individuals to join our inaugural cohort of AI Fellows. This program aims to advance the thoughtful and equitable integration of AI across the California community colleges by promoting innovation in teaching, learning, operational efficiency, and student support.

Program Overview

AI Fellows will play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI implementation across California's 116 community colleges. Fellows will work collaboratively with the Digital Center team, faculty, staff, and administrators to develop frameworks, guidelines, and resources that support the responsible adoption of AI technologies while maintaining our commitment to equity and student success.

Duration

Two-year appointment with possibility of renewal

Time Commitment

10-15 hours per week
(25% to 37.5% time)

Location and Travel Commitment

Remote with occasional in-person meetings. Some travel to attend conferences for presentations and facilitate trainings

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated expertise in artificial intelligence and its applications in education
  • Experience in higher education, preferably in community colleges
  • Strong commitment to equity and student success
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Recommended Focus Areas

Fellows will have the opportunity to specialize in one of the following critical areas along with an optional secondary focus area:

AI in Teaching and learning

Focus on supporting faculty and instructional design

  • Developing guidelines for AI-enhanced curriculum design
  • Creating frameworks for AI integration in online and hybrid learning
  • Supporting faculty in developing AI literacy and pedagogical best practices
AI Research and Innovation

Identify and evaluate new AI opportunities

  • Conducting research on AI impact in community colleges
  • Identifying emerging AI trends and applications that impact operational efficiency, teaching, learning, and/or student support
  • Developing proof-of-concept projects
  • Creating innovation frameworks for AI adoption

AI Workforce Development

Focus on preparing students from diverse and traditionally underserved backgrounds to participate in programs for AI driven changes in various industries and workforce programs

  • Developing AI skills training programs with consultation from faculty
  • Aligning industry partnerships for AI workforce initiatives
  • Reviewing the AI focused career pathways and design mapping for student journey and progression for stackable credentials and certifications leading to degree attainment
  • Aligning AI curriculum with career pathways mapping and workforce needs
  • Working directly with the Chancellor's Office Communications team, engage local districts/colleges Public Information Officers (PIOs) and the ICAN team to actively/widely promote the pathways to their campuses and in their communities
AI Infrastructure, Technical Configuration and/or API Integration

Focus on the technical aspects of implementing AI solutions across the system

  • Focusing on integration of AI tools within a broader ecosystem
  • Developing technical standards and/or working with leading vendors on product requirements and integrations
  • Mapping data flows and architecture
  • Planning for scalability of AI solutions
  • Contributing to the Digital Center’s data strategy relating to products across its portfolio
  • Partnering with the Foundation for Community Colleges to align efforts to establish and manage statewide vendor contracts within the California Community Colleges ecosystem, with emphasis on securing no-cost or reduced-cost student access to these platforms

AI Professional Development and Training

Focus on building AI literacy and capacity among faculty and staff across the system

  • Designing AI literacy programs for faculty and staff
  • Creating training materials and resources
  • Developing AI competency frameworks
  • Building communities of practice around AI adoption
AI Assessment and Learning Analytics

Leveraging AI for improved evaluation and data-driven decision making

  • Developing AI-enhanced evaluation frameworks
  • Creating guidelines for learning analytics implementation
  • Designing data-driven intervention strategies
  • Evaluating impact of AI solutions on the outcomes of Vision 2030

AI Student Support Services

Focus on AI applications that directly benefit students and ensure AI implementations are accessible to all users and follow universal design principles

  • Designing AI-enhanced student support systems to create efficiencies in the student services process
  • Developing training/mentoring frameworks and models
  • Developing frameworks for AI-powered academic advising
  • Creating guidelines for AI use in student services
  • Implementing early warning systems and predictive analytics
  • Designing and implementing hands-on AI literacy programs to develop student proficiency in leveraging artificial intelligence tools for academic and career applications
  • Ensuring AI tools meet accessibility standards
  • Developing guidelines for inclusive AI design
  • Creating frameworks for AI-enhanced accommodations
  • Implementing universal design principles in AI applications
